Every year, and I mean every year hundreds of thousands of Americans actually fall prey to the allure of a New Year resolution. Why is the disillusionment so contagious and so profitable for the companies that market to these dreamers? As with all aspects of my consumer lifestyle, I am psychologically averse to all things cheap in value. That is what your commercial resolution is, cheap.
The category of goal may not exactly tell you a lot about a person but it does reveal that moon side of their psyche. A little of their fear, maybe some of their hope, a sash of insecurity or a spell or narcissism. Which, ever one of these subconscious elements determining how they direct their energy and how deep in the psyche the goal is rooted doesn't matter. The eventuality for the majority of these dreamers is the same. Statistics are very clear that most people who set New Year's resolutions based on a materialistic goal quit by the third week. All these people are guilty of investing in the TEMU version of a New Year's resolution.
I never played into the New Year's resolution trap. Not because I did not have goals of my own, or that my moon side of my psyche hasn't helped shape my personality. I fall prey to plenty of the variables I mentioned in the previous paragraph. I just have a gift for understanding the human condition better than most. I understand that I don't need a resolution to commit to a goal. I am constantly setting objectives in every aspect of my life on a consistent basis.
An advertiser's job, at the directive of companies, is to garner as much lucrative revenue from habitual New Year's resolutionists as to overcome any drop in sales during the past year. They are out there to convince consumers that they need their product in order to achieve their goals. Wether that is a new watch to count your weight loss goals, a subscription to an investment strategy that will turn your finances around, or a home delivery program that preps and coordinates your food intake. Idealism to start the year off right.
What I am promoting here with this minimal rant is a means to change your routines at a base level thus providing you the skill to make you more successful overall. First off for all you binge shoppers, your resolution should be to see how long you can go without order a product online. The overall message that I am articulating has less to do with forms of addiction connected to consumption and more to do with people who really buy these dreams hoping that they will help them achieve a meaningful goal. The adventurer that sets off on the yellow brick road seeking resolution. As you traverse the obstacles it's not the loss of heart, or courage that likely stops you. If's your own mind and the probability of that nagging voice convincing you, you don't have time.
This is the resolution to all your goals, hopes and dreams that you should be focusing on. The management of your time and energy. They are the life force to living. And every argument you make about how you don't have time for that, you don't have the energy to make that. If these things are the things you really need to get done to make yourself happy then you are the only one to blame for your overall failure in taking care of your core responsibilities. Don't get angry at this and give up, get motivated and get to work on yourself.
Start looking at your day-to-day and begin with the little steps. Carve out an extra 15 minutes of freedom just for yourself, to do something on your list for your highest good. Assess the areas like work commute, consolidating errands, hours at the office, TV or video game distractions, drinking engagements, doom scrolling, appointment commitments, or sports spectating. Whatever vice you most turn to when you just don't want to commit to a goal or resolution. Or whatever task you feel is a commitment and really is just feeding a negative cycle of behavior.
For instance, driving to and from work or to and from the grocery to and from errands, anywhere you go it's one of the leading causes of fatality and offers no positive mental health benefits. I recommend trying out the act of public transportation, walking or biking to either your work, the grocer, or appointment at least once a week. Start off small, try it out. The results will be astounding. You will be getting a workout instead of sitting still, you can read a book or write in your journal instead of sitting in traffic, walking can be very meditative this will give you some quiet time to consolidate your thoughts. These little acts will help you understand time management from a new perspective The results will be routine changing and this is what you really need to achieve the bigger goals.
Reprograming your behaviors is not going to happen overnight. But setting some big New Year resolution, doomed for failure is exactly what it precludes to be an act in failure. To move on and grow you need to start with the mental. Teaching yourself to realign what is important is the beginning to a whole new way of traversing your life. This all begins with leaving the social norms behind and putting yourself as number one. Once you accept that, you will start setting up your time-management around your goals leading to not even needing New Year resolutions because you have now established habits to achieve your goals any time of the year.
